George Best 1946-2005

The mercurial footballing genius George Best has died aged 59 after a long battle with alcohol problem. Undoubtedly the most talented footballer Britain has produced, the Manchester United legend and former European Footballer of the Year helped United to their first ever European Cup glory back in 1968. Never to have graced the World Cup, he earned 37 caps for Northern Ireland and scored 9 goals. Retiring at a tender age of 28, it makes you think what else he could have achieved if he continued playing through his prime years. I've never had the chance to see him work his genius apart from some short video clips now and then, but I could understand why he was regarded as pure genius. The footballing world will today mourn the loss of one of its prodigal sons.

  1. Our Belfast Boy. He made the Irish proud. Like a dancer out there on the field. Amazing. He was the most all-round footballer I have ever seen. And he had an amazing sense of humour. God Bless George.
